Mumbai, May 2026 – Every evening, while most people his age are winding down, 85-year-old Bharat Panchal steps out with a simple mission: to make Mumbai’s roads safer, one whistle blow at a time.
From 4:30 pm to 8 pm, without fail, Panchal stands at the Thakur Complex signal on the Western Express Highway in Kandivali East. Dressed in ordinary clothes, armed with nothing more than a whistle and a torch, he directs traffic, stops vehicles cutting into wrong lanes, and gently reminds drivers to wear helmets and seatbelts. He has done this every single day for years — not a single evening missed.
There is no official uniform, no salary, and no government authority. When the traffic police offered him a reflective jacket and the official position of ‘Traffic Warden’, he politely declined. “This work is not for money,” he says firmly. “It is for the safety of citizens.”
Panchal believes this selfless service is what keeps him healthy and energetic even at 85. “I don’t need any medicine,” he smiles. “Every day I meet new people, talk to them, explain the rules. Thanks to his constant presence, traffic rule violations at the signal have dropped dramatically, bringing smoother flow and fewer accidents.
