Petrol and diesel prices were hiked for the fourth time this month on Sunday, adding fresh pressure on consumers already struggling with rising inflation. In Delhi, petrol has now crossed the ₹102 mark, while diesel prices have also increased sharply due to escalating geopolitical tensions linked to the Iran conflict.

According to the latest revision effective from May 25 morning, petrol in Delhi has gone up by ₹2.61 per litre to reach ₹102.12, while diesel has increased by ₹2.71 per litre to ₹95.20.

Similar price revisions have been implemented across major cities. In Mumbai, petrol is now priced at ₹111.21 per litre after an increase of ₹2.72, and diesel has risen by ₹2.81 to ₹97.83 per litre. Kolkata saw one of the steepest jumps, with petrol increasing by ₹2.87 to ₹113.51 per litre and diesel going up by ₹2.80. In Chennai, petrol rose by ₹2.46 to ₹107.77 per litre, while diesel increased by ₹2.57 to ₹99.55 per litre.

The sharp revision comes amid rising geopolitical tensions in West Asia, particularly due to the conflict involving Iran. International crude oil prices, which were earlier around $70 per barrel, have now surged past the $100 mark. State-owned oil companies including Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum were facing heavy monthly losses, and the latest hike is aimed at partially covering these costs.

This marks the fourth increase in petrol and diesel prices in May 2026 alone, breaking a long period of relative stability.

The repeated fuel price hikes are expected to have a wide impact on the common man and the broader economy. Transportation and logistics costs are likely to rise further, which could push up prices of vegetables, fruits, milk and other essential items. Auto, taxi and bus fares may also see an increase in several states. Farmers are expected to face higher costs for running tractors and irrigation pumps.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to citizens to use petroleum products judiciously in view of the evolving situation in West Asia.
