Spread awareness among cattle keepers about the virus and urge to maintain cleanliness and strict surveillance

No case of Lumpy skin virus in the district so far

Vadodara animal husbandry department under District Panchayat is strictly monitoring the Lumpy skin disease (LSD), a viral disease spreading in cattles. They distribute posters and pamphlets at talukas during the programmes of Vande Gujarat Raths in the district and also spread awareness among cattle keepers about the virus. Thankfully there is no single case of lumpy virus witnessed in Vadodara district till date.

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is a viral disease of cattle, caused by lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) spreading through Capripoxvirus family. Its a vector borne disease and spread through mosquitoes, flies, ticks and others. However extensive care and awareness can prevent animals from get infected with virus.

Vadodara district Zilla Panchayat Animal Husbandry department is keeping surveillance regarding the disease and also spreading awareness among cattle keepers. “We distribute posters and pamphlets regarding the virus to people along with the Vande Gujarat Raths moving in the district. We also get treatment reports from 1962 Karuna ambulance and also private visits from Ghanishtha Pashu Sudharna scheme and Baroda dairy. The surveillance work is going on by our teams and we request the cattle keepers to part the animals having any skin disorder from the rest and inform the animal hospital immediately. Till date no case of Lumpy virus comes to light in the district,” said Dr. Jignesh Dave, Deputy Director, Animal Husbandry department, District Panchayat Vadodara.

The department also focus on cleanliness and fresh fodder to the animals during this time of the season. “Its a vector borne disease and spread through insects from one animal to other. During monsoon when conditions are muddy and watery, strict care shall be taken by the keepers to prevent their animals from this virus. Maintain cleanliness and strict survillance of the animal keeping areas, clean water and food are some of the steps for safety of animals. Most importantly part the suspected animals from others and inform the nearby animal hospital is mandatory,” said Dr. Tejas Shukla, In charge Assistant Director, Animal Husbandry department, District Panchayat, Vadodara.
