Assam TMC president Ripun Bora slams CM for polarizing delimitation process

GUWAHATI, JAN 3: Assam Trinamool Congress(TMC) President Ripun Bora slammed chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for polarizing and giving communal colour in the delimitation process.

Talking to media persons, Ripun Bora said, “We want to ask the chief minister will this delimitation be helpful for people. This is only bureaucratic delimitation. It is not done by the delimitation commission. In commission there are also public representatives like MPs, MLAs who are part of the delimitation commission as associate member and they represent the public sentiment on the issue,”.

“This delimitation is only for three years, and this will not reflect public sentiment as there wouldn’t be any public representative in this, this will be done directly by Election Commission. In 2026, there will be a country wide delimitation where both Assembly and parliament seats will increase across the country. That time again in Assam delimitation will be done,” Bora asserted.

Bora furter said, “So we are questioning the chief minister, what kind of emergency had erupted that they have to merge four districts and the aspirations of the people of those districts for the delimitation,”.

“In delimitation guideline population has the highest priority, now by questioning the population based rule the BJP government  is only trying to play polarization politics,” Assam TMC president said.

The Assam  cabinet approved the administrative merger of four newly formed districts with existing districts.

As per the cabinet approval, Biswanath district will be merged with Sonitpur, Hojai will be merged with Nagaon, Tamulpur district will be merged with Baksa, and Bajali district is being merged with Barpeta district.

This has been done in accordance with the Election Commission’s order on delimitation, mandating that Assam government makes no changes in any districts or administrative units from January 1, 2023, as the state will begin its delimitation process.
